Soda, Coke, or Pop?

Hello! So I read the Daily Post Challenge and tried to think about what I wanted to discuss and back up with photos. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/writing-challenge-image-vs-text/ Well, I am going with soda! (and how bad it is for you!) I want to know where you’re from and what you call it as well! I call it soda, but most people around me here in the south call it Coke and are referring to not just Coca-Cola but other drinks too (I don’t like it cuz I’m sorta OCD, I’m not gonna refer to Sprite or Dr. Pepper as Coke!) So is Coke/Soda/Pop really that bad for you?

The truth is, yes. Many of us don’t want to accept this realization because, frankly, we love it. That cold, bubbly goodness just tastes good! But these soft drinks aren’t so ‘soft’ after all! They contain acid which wears down the enamel on your teeth for one thing, and who wants an ugly and unhealthy smile?! Oh, another thing, those diet options or no calorie options really aren’t much better. You may not be getting the calories, but you are still not getting any nutritional value whatsoever. Many beverages, even ones that are not caffeinated or carbonated, contain tons of sugar! It’s like eating cubes of sugar, which you know is not great for your body! Check out this comparison, and try to imagine eating that much sugar by itself in one setting…

Wouldn’t be so fun, I think! And don’t get me wrong, I love sugar! And I enjoy sodas, but I try to have them in moderation because I know they only do damage to my body. If you have cut soda out of your diet completely, props to you! Some of my family and friends have and I admire them for that! I find it hard to resist drinking soda, especially being on a college campus. It’s everywhere! It’s easier in most dining halls/eating places to find some soda to drink than it is to find water to drink! So I have tried to cut it down so that I only drink maybe a couple sodas a week. And my go-to one is Sprite because that’s what I grew up drinking. My mom didn’t let me have caffeinated drinks because I would be jumping off the walls super hyper apparently! Now I think it barely has an effect on me, seeing as how I eat so much chocolate. (I am definitely a chocoholic, but that’s a story for another time!) Well this post is getting pretty long, so I’ll wrap it up soon. If you still aren’t convinced you should drink less soda, check out this next diagram to see all the damage it does to your body! This picture is a good reminder for me to resist soda at each meal!

If that doesn’t make you want to stop drinking soda, well I guess I cannot help you! Have fun gaining weight when you’re trying to lose it, and have fun getting worse teeth when you’re trying to make them look better! Good luck cutting down on your Cokes everyone! A success story always helps motivate me, so if you have been soda-less for a long time, feel free to share your awesome resistance skills and inspire others! My mom used to drink Dr. Pepper practically daily, and now she has been without it for a really long time! So don’t feel discouraged if you do want to quit, just keep trying and have loved ones support you! Have a great week!

  1. Very informative post. I watched a video on youtube about how a one-year experiment was done with coke and a hard boiled egg (still in its shell). Fast forward to the end of the year, the enamel shell is in granular form resting at the bottom of the glass, leaving only the boiled egg intact – Scary!
